PETALING JAYA: Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC) has achieved a major recognition with its first-time inclusion in Newsweek's World's Best Specialised Hospitals 2027 ranking.
The hospital was ranked as No. 1 in Malaysia for Paediatrics, with Oncology recognised as a standout treatment within the specialty.
The milestone comes as SMC expands its specialised paediatric services with the opening of Tower F, the hospital’s dedicated Children’s Tower, further strengthening its ability to provide comprehensive, integrated and family-centred care for children.
The ranking places SMC among leading hospitals worldwide as part of a global ranking covering across 13 medical specialities, including Mayo Clinic – Rochester (United States), Cleveland Clinic (United States) and Johns Hopkins Hospital (United States).
Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long said, “The debut recognition in Newsweek’s World’s Best Specialised Hospitals ranking is a significant milestone for our flagship hospital, reflecting our advancements in paediatric, oncology and neurology in the region.
“This recognition in paediatrics is particularly meaningful and timely as we mark the opening of our purpose-built 216 bedded Children’s Tower, which brings together paediatric subspecialty services, including paediatric haematology and oncology, supported by a multidisciplinary paediatric team."
Building on this commitment to specialised care, SMC houses a Children’s Health and Development Centre encompassing comprehensive paediatric subspecialties among hospitals in Malaysia. The newly opened Children’s Tower further enhances SMC’s paediatric capabilities with an expanded range of paediatric subspecialities and services within a purpose-designed environment.
The hospital also pioneered the country’s first private hospital dedicated 24-hour Children’s Walk-in and Emergency Department providing urgent, comforting care for infants, children and adolescents, a comprehensive Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), and specialised inpatient wards.
Sunway Medical Centre (Sunway City) chief executive officer Erica Lam said that the recognition reaffirms the hospital’s commitment to clinical excellence and patient-centred care, reinforcing SMC’s position as leader in healthcare especially in paediatric services.

This latest achievement in the World’s Best Specialised Hospitals 2027, which also ranked SMC at No. 1 in Malaysia for Neurology and earned high ranking for Oncology, further strengthens SMC's standing across Newsweek's healthcare rankings. This follows SMC’s recognition for the fourth consecutive year in Newsweek's Best Specialised Hospitals Asia Pacific 2026 rankings, earning distinctions across eight specialties including Paediatrics, Oncology, and Neurology.
SMC was also ranked No. 1 in Malaysia in Newsweek's World's Best Hospitals rankings in both 2025 and 2026 and was recognised as Malaysia's top hospital in Newsweek's World's Best Smart Hospitals 2026 ranking.
The World’s Best Specialised Hospitals 2027 ranking assessed hospitals based on three key pillars: international peer recommendations from healthcare professionals, relevant speciality-specific accreditations and certifications, and the implementation of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). The methodology provides a global benchmark for specialised expertise.
