FIVE bold signature cocktails that marry local botanicals with sophisticated mixology are making their debut today, marking a new chapter for one of Kuala Lumpur’s popular watering holes.

The curated collection serves as a showcase for mixologist Janelle Carissa’s career-defining drinks at Arthur’s Bar and Grill in Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur.

Each creation features a different spirit base, highlighting her flair for craft cocktails that cater to a diverse range of palates.

“These cocktails are my signature creations, developed since I started bartending, which I would showcase at guest shifts.

“It is a menu that has something for everyone.

“I wanted to incorporate many twists with a local touch, showcasing Malaysia’s wide range of local produce,” she said.

To start, the Scarlet Cabarello that mixes Don Julio Reposado tequila and homemade watermelon vinaigrette is refreshing and unexpectedly bright.

It serves as an ideal palate cleanser to kick off an evening of bold flavours.

While designed to be easy-drinking, the opening notes are remarkably robust before giving way to the delicate sweetness of watermelon, further enhanced by Paragon Timur berry cordial and orange bitters.

Next is the Shiso Curious, a playful nod to its botanical build that highlights the herbal synergy of green tea, kaffir lime and fresh shiso.

“The lemon-infused gin is made by sous-viding the gin with lemon peel; the cocktail is inspired by the Lemon Drop,” said Carissa.

Coated with coloured sugar on the glass rim, the drink offers a clean, zesty profile.

For something more tropical, Nangka Nights offers a contemporary interpretation of the classic Jungle Bird.

It replaces traditional lime with calamansi for a flavour that feels closer to home.

Mixed with Campari and jackfruit-infused spiced rum, the drink is balanced by caramelised pineapple cordial and simple syrup, topped with a layer of foam and freeze-dried jackfruit for texture.

Fans of the Old Fashioned will find that Carissa’s modern interpretation, Nuts About Earl, does not disappoint.

The fat-washed peanut butter infused with Johnnie Walker Black Label whiskey gives the cocktail a smooth, velvety texture.

It is mixed with palm sugar Earl Grey syrup and orange bitters, garnished with a brown sugar stick coated in peanut butter and peanut cookies.

Meanwhile, the Glorious Martini appeals to those who enjoy spirit-forward cocktails and coffee, making it a perfect nightcap.

This drink harmonises vanilla bean-infused vodka with Tia Maria coffee liqueur, Baileys Irish Cream, freshly brewed espresso and a dash of chocolate bitters.

The cocktail masterfully bridges the gap between dark, robust espresso and the creamy sweetness of vanilla, offering a complex caffeine kick that is as smooth as it is spirited.

Positioned as a sophisticated, Manhattan-style gastrobar, the bar pairs its premier liquid offerings with Western comfort classics.

The garlic prawns are a “must-order” – an addictive bar snack featuring succulent prawns sauteed in olive oil with fresh garlic and dried chilli.

The dish is served with a toasted baguette, perfect for soaking up the aromatic oil.

For those seeking a more decadent bite, the Japanese A5 Wagyu skewers are a stand-out.

Finished with a vibrant chimichurri, the rich, tender beef offers a luxurious mouthfeel balanced by a bright, herbaceous aftertaste.

Guests can also round out the experience with the kitchen’s signature smoked chicken wings and fried baby octopus, providing a satisfying crunch to pair with the night’s liquid treats.
