Contractor suspended after Sepang road mishap

Air Selangor has suspended a contractor following failed road restoration along Jalan Air Hitam in Sepang which led to a motorcyclist being injured.

On March 24, a motorcyclist travelling towards Serdang was thrown from his bike after hitting a sunken patch on the road.

A dashcam video of the incident, recorded by another motorist, has since gone viral with over 15,000 views.

Initial investigations by Public Works Department (JKR) found the road surface had subsided at a section where the contractor recently patched a burst pipe.

An Air Selangor spokesperson said the contractor used a cold mix as a stopgap measure to repair the damage.

However, a depression later emerged.

“The contractor was supposed to carry out proper repairs on March 24, but unfortunately, the accident occurred before rectification could be completed.

“We do not tolerate substandard work, especially when public safety is at stake.

“A show-cause letter has been issued and the contractor is suspended in line with our internal policy,” said the spokesperson.

Air Selangor has since repaired the road and reached out to the victim to assist with insurance and medical matters.

Meanwhile, in Kepong, community activist Yee Poh Ping said roads around the Fortune Square commercial area were in poor condition due to years of neglect.

He said the issue could be linked to how the roads were reinstated after development works.

“The project goes back to around 2005. Usually, the roads should be properly rebuilt before being handed over to the local authority.

“But until today, the conditions show that something may not have been done properly or maintained over time.

“We also do not know who is responsible or why it has taken so long,” said Yee.

StarMetro recently reported on jurisdictional boundary issues that have, in some cases, delayed road repairs and complicated accountability.

Yee said the area in Kepong had deteriorated over the years, with visible damage posing risks to road users.

“The roads are in a terrible state.

“There are potholes, sunken patches and depressions, with some areas appearing to give way.

“At the junction between Jalan Metro Perdana Barat 2 and Jalan Metro Perdana Barat 14 in Taman Usahawan, parts of the road structure are damaged, with sections collapsing and the surface sinking in several spots.”

He said prolonged neglect, combined with daily use by heavy vehicles, had worsened conditions around the junction.

“As time goes by, the roads continue to deteriorate.

“The constant movement of heavy vehicles has affected the stability of the junction, making it increasingly unsafe,” he added.

Yee said motorcyclists had suffered damage to their vehicles over the years, while elderly pedestrians faced difficulty navigating uneven surfaces.

He said the matter was repeatedly raised with Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) Planning and Infrastructure Department, but no action has been taken.

“We have highlighted this issue several times.

“Just recently, I raised it again and DBKL said the developer would be asked to carry out necessary repairs.

“But until today, there has been no feedback and no visible action on the ground.”

He stressed that public safety should take priority.

“If DBKL cannot resolve the matter immediately, then fix the road first and recover the cost later.

“Safety must come first,” Yee repeated.
