RAMADAN bazaars in Shah Alam, Selangor, will once again become hubs for giving back.
Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) is bringing back its MySave Food@Bazaar Ramadan 2026 programme – an initiative aimed at collecting surplus food from traders and redistributing it to those in need.
The programme would run from Feb 23 to March 13 at five selected bazaars – Section 13, Section 17, Section 19, Section 28 and Section U16.
Under the initiative, traders would hand over unsold food in good and safe condition to volunteers stationed at the respective sites.
“The programme serves as a platform for MBSA to address food wastage while supporting environmental sustainability efforts by reducing the volume sent to landfills.
“It also promotes responsible food storage, distribution and consumption practices,” MBSA said in a statement.
All collected food would be recorded, weighed and labelled before being channelled to surau, mosques, low-cost flats and student hostels at public and private higher education institutions.
A total of 616 volunteers from various agencies were expected to take part.
The programme has been carried out continuously since 2021, following encouraging response from Ramadan bazaar traders.
“During last year’s programme, MBSA collected 7,717kg of surplus food,” said MBSA, adding that the initiative was in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
