DEVELOPMENT projects aimed at improving the daily lives of Labuan residents took centre stage during Hannah Yeoh’s first official visit as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories).

She focused on the progress of infrastructure and community initiatives prioritising key basic needs, including solid waste management, water supply stability and efforts to strengthen sustainable local economic development.

“During my first visit to Labuan, I have coordination meetings with Labuan Corporation’s top management to assess the status of ongoing projects, identify implementation challenges and enhance follow-up coordination between federal and local agencies.

“I am also engaging with Labuan’s tourism industry players to explore opportunities to strengthen the island’s regional tourism potential,” she told reporters after visiting the RM2.5mil water storage tank construction project at Taman Mutiara housing area, reported Bernama.

As part of a ground-level, implementation-based approach, Yeoh inspected the progress of three key projects.

Besides the water project at Taman Mutiara, the others included the construction of a new sanitary landfill cell and the upgrading of the leachate treatment plant at the Kampung Bukit Kalam landfill site − Labuan’s only waste disposal facility − with focus on meeting project timelines and ensuring public health and environmental safety.

“I visited the landfill and was briefed on the project.

“Labuan Corporation, together with Housing and Local Government Ministry, will be conducting a study on effective and cost-efficient waste disposal methods,” she added.

Yeoh also visited a proposed RM11mil eco-tourism and public recreation project along the Nagalang coastal road, which aimed to boost Labuan’s tourism sector and create economic opportunities for local communities through sustainable tourism activities.

She was accompanied by Labuan MP Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman, Labuan Corporation chairman Datuk Mohd Husni Mohamad Salleh and senior officials from the Federal Territories Department, Labuan Corporation and related government agencies.
