SHAH ALAM marked its 25th anniversary this year with a “gift” for senior citizens in the form of free parking.
To be eligible, applicants must be ratepayers without outstanding assessment tax payments, and the applicant’s residence and vehicle must be registered under the same name.
Mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said over 20,000 seniors living in Selangor’s capital city were eligible for the free parking initiative, which would be valid for two years.
Shah Alam was granted city status on Oct 10, 2000.
The current year has also proven to be a good one for public transport users in Shah Alam.
Four Smart Selangor electric buses were introduced this year along the SA01 route connecting Shah Alam KTM station to Section 7 in the city.
MBSA allocated RM5.5mil to operate buses on the route for a period of three years.
There are 12 Smart Selangor free bus routes in the city.
It is free for citizens but foreigners are charged a nominal fee of 90sen.
The city council also announced that it would get tough on car workshops, automotive accessory outlets, carwash and tyre shops that illegally occupy public parking bays, with offenders facing fines of RM1,000.
It is mandatory for such businesses to rent two parking bays in front of their shop entrance.
There are 431 car workshops, automotive accessory outlets, carwash and tyre shops under MBSA’s jurisdiction.
MBSA’s solar-powered closed-circuit television (CCTV) system called Iris was named the overall winner in the Social Innovation and Best Innovation Project competition categories under Selangor Public Service Innovation Persada 2025.
Mohd Fauzi said the technology would bolster city-wide surveillance by expanding surveillance capabilities in areas without access to electricity.
The city council also launched the SmartQ system, an ISO-certified document management system that would lead to reduced document retrieval times and reliance on physical documents, while aligning with the national agenda for digital transformation.
MBSA was also one of four pioneer local authorities to implement the Selangor Intelligent Parking system.
The parking system is operated by Rantaian Mesra Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned unit of Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI), under a 10-year concession with local councils and a private partner.
Revenue division is as follows: 50% to the concessionaire, 40% to MBSA and 10% to MBI.
Mohd Fauzi also disclosed that between January and June this year, MBSA collected RM10mil in parking fees, and RM3.6mil in compound fines.
MBSA also allocated RM150mil for the Setia Alam flood mitigation plan to address frequent flash floods there.
Selangor youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said the project involving Sungai Binjai and Sungai Puloh should bring relief to 200,000 residents in the area.
Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin launched the Shah Alam Cat Park at Dataran Kemerdekaan, Section 14, in February, marking a new milestone in pet-friendly public spaces.
The feline playground called Catopia features elements specially catered to cats, including mini fountains, shelters, hanging bridges, tunnels, feeding stations and designated litter zones.
On Aug 1, Shah Alam witnessed the appointment of its first female deputy mayor, Safriah Md Adzhar.
She took over from acting deputy mayor Madiyan Baweh.
It was also curtains for the iconic Shah Alam Stadium.
Demolition was completed by mid-year, with groundwork for its replacement, the RM3.28bil Shah Alam Sports Complex, beginning this year.
The three-phase redevelopment is expected to be completed in 2029.
