STRICT enforcement will be taken against car workshops, automotive accessory outlets, carwash and tyre shops that illegally occupy public parking bays, with offenders facing fines of RM1,000.

Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) development deputy secretary Aniza Osman said it was mandatory for such businesses to rent two parking bays in front of their shop entrance.

There are 431 car workshops, automotive accessory outlets, carwash and tyre shops under MBSA’s jurisdiction.

“These businesses that occupy public parking spaces for repair works or to display items are inconveniencing other motorists.

“Under the Licensing, Trade, Business and Industry (MBSA) By-Laws 2007, a RM1,000 fine can be issued,” she said.

Offences include placing traffic cones to reserve spots, stacking tyres in parking spots or using the space as a personal driveway without paying the fee for the lot, she added.

Earlier, Aniza chaired a town hall session on Guidelines for Car Services Activities at MBSA Convention Centre in Section 13, Shah Alam.

More than 100 owners of car service business such as workshops, automotive accessory outlets, carwash and tyre shops attended the half-day session.

Aniza said it was mandatory for these businesses to comply with the law.

“Businesses were told of the regulations as we do not want operators to cause obstruction,” she added.

“Businesses do not own the streets and MBSA’s laws are clear – comply or face action.”

Aniza said the city council was aware of the frustration faced by motorists in finding parking, especially in commercial areas.

She added that the aim was not to adversely impact businesses but to ensure better traffic flow and protect public interest.

MBSA councillor Vincent Chow said the Enforcement Department should improve monitoring of such practices in commercial areas.

He also urged motorists to lodge complaints about unauthorised use of parking spaces on public roads.
