A MAJOR mall group has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices, in conjunction with United Nations Day.

Sunway Malls dedicated its latest initiative − themed “From This to That” − to promoting eco-conscious habits (recycling, reusing, reimagining) and raising awareness for UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Shoppers were invited to participate in a series of eco-friendly workshops held across four of its retail hubs: Sunway Velocity Mall and Sunway Pyramid in the Klang Valley, and Sunway Big Box and Sunway Kluang Mall in Johor, according to a Sunway Malls media release.

Sunway Malls chief executive officer HC Chan said the group’s commitment to environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles was a covenant of trust with employees, customers and communities.

“It is how we ensure growth is inclusive, ethical and sustainable for every stakeholder.

“Hence, we are steadfast in pursuing sustainability initiatives in Sunway Malls,” he said.

The mall group also announced its latest investment in food digester machines.

Providing on-site facilities encourages tenants to play their part in waste management and ensures that sustainability is a collective movement.

Unlike composters that turn organic scraps into soil nourishment, the new digesters transform food waste into greywater, an environmentally friendly discharge.

Plans are in place to partner with specialists to upcycle the greywater into liquid fertiliser.

The first food digester in Malaysia is currently operational at Sunway Velocity and is scheduled to be extended to Sunway Pyramid by the end of 2025.

The mall group’s latest certifications include ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management), ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and Sirim 55 (Environmental, Social and Governance Management).

Sunway Pyramid is the first mall and 16th company in Malaysia to receive the prestigious Sirim 55 certification.

Apart from introducing the first food digester in Malaysia, Sunway Malls was also first in the nation to launch smart toilet systems to improve water efficiency aside from smart parking to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate the printing of parking tickets, which diverts 0.5 tonnes of paper waste from the landfill annually.

Infrastructure upgrades such as motion-activated escalators, rainwater harvesting and rooftop solar panels continue to conserve natural resources and build independence through innovation.

Sunway Malls has partnerships with buy-back centres and recycling vendors to encourage a culture of reuse and recycling among tenants and shoppers.
