RESIDENTS of a senior care home were pleasantly surprised when a group of hairstylists and photographers turned up at Pusat Jagaan Mahmudah Malaysia (PJMM) in Semenyih, Selangor.

The hairstylists from Le Classic Academy gave the residents haircuts while members of Photographic Society of Petaling Jaya (PSPJ) captured their portraits at a mini studio set up in the charity home.

The event organised by PSPJ far exceeded residents’ expectations and brought smiles all around.

PSPJ organising chairperson Alicia Thau said PSPJ events were focused on delivering practical help and heartfelt service.

“Some of the residents here have never had a proper photo taken of themselves or had a haircut by a professional stylist, so it means a lot to give them something so personal.

“We collected over RM7,000 from our donors, including PSPJ members, prior to this visit.

“About 80% of the funds was used to purchase a high-demand item, which is adult diapers, while the remainder went towards daily essentials,” said Thau.

PJMM resident Hzahari Md Noor, 55, said programmes conducted at the home for the past three years were solely focused on food distribution.

“I’m very touched by today’s programme as it is something different. We each received a framed portrait as a memento of today’s event,” said the former newspaper vendor.

The visit included engaging activities for the residents, a commemorative tree planting and donation presentation ceremony, in addition to lunch.

Sponsors and donors included Digicolor, Canon Marketing Malaysia and Ping Studio, which provided equipment for the mini studio, as well as BE Pharmacy and Yara Foundation.

PJMM secretary Syafiq Mohiadin said 35 of the home’s 50 residents participated in the programme, as the rest were bedridden.

“We welcome programmes for the residents.

“Our home has no permanent sponsorship. We operate entirely based on public support and individual initiatives,” said Syafiq.
