A PLASTIC-free campaign is being organised by Selangor government at the Bagan Lalang beach in Sepang, on May 24.

The programme is part of efforts to strengthen the state’s environmental sustainability agenda and reduce single-use plastic.

State public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said Bagan Lalang would be the first location out of four planned, under the campaign.

“This is a continuous advocacy measure towards reducing plastic use, strengthening recycling practices and promoting a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.

“The campaign is also to educate the public about the long-term effects of plastic waste on the environment, ecosystem and public health, besides encouraging local communities to be more proactive in waste management,” she said, as reported by Bernama.

Jamaliah said a 3km run, aerobics and exhibitions by government agencies were among the planned activities.

She said the public could bring recyclable items to get incentives.

There will also be tree planting, fashion show with plastic-free and environmental theme involving children.

“In an effort to ensure the effectiveness of this campaign, all traders involved will not use plastic bags and any plastic containers throughout the programme.

“Visitors who bring their own non-plastic food and beverage containers will receive a special discount for every purchase at the food stalls,” said Jamaliah.

She invited the public, especially residents around Sepang and nearby areas, to take part in the programme.

She said such efforts would increase public awareness about environmental sustainability.
