Business operators want solution to waste problem in Shah Alam commercial area

OPERATORS of businesses in the commercial area around Jalan Presiden U1/F in Section U1, Shah Alam in Selangor, are upset with rubbish collectors who fail to follow the collection schedule.

They said this has resulted in large bags of uncollected rubbish left piled on road dividers and strewn at street corners.

Some bags were filled with dried leaves while others had leftover food and packaging that emitted a strong stench.

“It is just ridiculous. Our company pays assessment tax to Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) promptly, so we deserve better services from the local council,” said Norsyidah Mohd Afandi, 41, who works in the area.

“There was a designated rubbish disposal house but someone set fire to it and the structure was demolished.

“Now we don’t have a proper area to dump rubbish,” she said.

Norsyidah said for more than a week, business operators there were forced to leave their rubbish neatly packed in black bags on road dividers for collection.

Some commercial lot owners and tenants reported litter strewn across the road divider, the result of uncollected rubbish bags being torn and their contents spilled.

They said this situation marred the image of a commercial area located in a city.

Marketing personnel Shaiful Nizam Ghazali, 50, urged MBSA to rebuild the rubbish disposal house and provide roll-on roll-off (RoRo) bins for each of the business premises.

“Without proper rubbish disposal house or bins, we are seeing an infestation of rats all over the place,” he said.

When contacted, MBSA spokesperson said each of the business owners in Jalan Presiden U1/F must get their own RoRo 240-litre bins.

“MBSA had informed all the owners of the businesses there that they must have their own 240L bins,” said the spokesperson.

The MBSA spokesperson added that the notification was carried out when the ratepayers made assessment tax payments.

“As for the rubbish disposal house, it was demolished as outsiders had been dumping rubbish there and the structure was burnt several times,” said the spokesperson.

“MBSA will not rebuild the rubbish disposal house,” said the MBSA spokesperson.

Update at print time: MBSA has cleared the rubbish.
