SOME 500 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations will be installed at a Johor outlet mall by the end of this year, marking a significant step in Malaysia’s push for greener, more sustainable mobility solutions.
Genting Simon president and chief operating officer Jean Marie Pin Harry said the project would incorporate cutting-edge technology to support electric vehicles and position Johor Premium Outlets as South-East Asia’s largest fast-charging EV hub.
“We plan to instal 500 EV chargers in phases.
“The first phase started at the end of last year and we now have 50 charging stations.
“We aim to have all 500 charging stations operational within a year,” he told StarMetro after the launch of the EV charging stations at Johor Premium Outlets in Kulai.
Pin Harry said the new charging infrastructure would feature direct current (DC) outputs ranging from 280kW to 1MW, with the standout addition being South-East Asia’s first publicly accessible 1MW charger.
“Previously, with older EV models, vehicle users would usually need to charge their vehicles overnight.
“But with our charging stations, they can fully charge their vehicle in anywhere from an hour to just five minutes, depending on the charging capacity.
“This milestone solidifies Malaysia’s leadership in green mobility.
“By incorporating these state-of-the-art charging stations, we are not only supporting the rising demand for EV infrastructure but also positioning Johor Premium Outlets as a leader in sustainability,” he added.
Pin Harry said the new charging hub was made possible through a strategic partnership with Yinson Greentech’s chargEV and DC Handal, which are the service providers.
The chargers are designed to accommodate a wide variety of electric vehicles, with the flexibility to keep pace with future advancements in EV technology.
The development also includes the electrification of Johor Premium Outlets’ fleet of shuttle buses, which will provide a direct connection between the mall and key transport hubs, including Johor Baru checkpoints.
“This move is set to make sustainable travel even more accessible for both local and international visitors.
“Hourly and daily EV car rental services will be offered through partnerships with GoCar and drivEV, further enhancing the outlet’s eco-friendly offerings.”
Pin Harry said with over 4.4 million vehicles from Singapore entering Malaysia last year, it was crucial to encourage the use of electric vehicles to help reduce harmful emissions.
He added that the new EV infrastructure would complement existing charging stations installed by DC Handal, further solidifying the centre’s commitment to a greener future.
