SEVERAL events have been lined up by Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki and her team to enliven this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations in her constituency.

The festivities started off with the distribution of meat as well as food baskets and will continue with an arts and culture festival, Hakka traditional event and celebrations at the local council level.

“I continued a Chinese New Year tradition started by my predecessor, ex-assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, to distribute meat to elderly folk in Kampung Baru Seri Kembangan,” said Wong, adding that the programme was targeted at those aged 70 and above.

Wong will be giving one whole chicken to each recipient.

One of the reasons for the change, she explained, was to support the state government by sourcing chicken from the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation.

“This year’s programme benefitted 850 recipients; 800 from Seri Kembangan constituency and 50 from the neighbouring Seri Serdang state seat.

“In addition to a whole chicken, each recipient got some lap cheong (dried Chinese sausages) and a 5kg bag of rice sponsored by Sunflower Rice,” she added.

Wong said the programme included a registration and vetting process to ensure only one person per household received the items.

“B40 families with a household income of RM3,000 or below are also entitled for the Jom Shopping Perayaan scheme.

“This state programme offers a RM200 voucher for families to help with festive preparations,” she said.

She added that 550 vouchers were allocated for Seri Kembangan.

Those aged 60 and above, as well as low-income families also received either food baskets or ang pow from Wong.

The food basket were donated by various companies and organisations.

An event called “Happiness Carnival” will be held on Feb 8 and 9, followed by a Pesta Ang Pow on Feb 15 and a Hakka celebration known as “Heaven Mending Day” on Feb 17.

“The Happiness Carnival will have an art market and will kickstart the Serdang Tourism campaign,” said Wong.

“Under this campaign, we will highlight the heritage of Serdang which encompasses Seri Kembangan and parts of Seri Serdang and Balakong.

“We will also be unveiling the campaign’s official mascot, a starfruit called Bling Bling, and a Serdang Tourism map.”

The Pesta Ang Pow is a large-scale celebration jointly organised with Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ).

Wong said the Heaven Mending Day would showcase a selection of Hakka and Chinese delicacies including choi pan (steamed dumplings) and nian gao (glutinous rice cake).

Heaven Mending Day marks the day when the Chinese mythological goddess Nuwa is believed to have saved the mortal world by using colourful stones to mend the sky after it was damaged during a war between the gods.

Wong said her constituency houses Kampung Baru Seri Kembangan, which is the biggest new village in Selangor and also the biggest Hakka new village in Malaysia.

She and her team have also been distributing specially printed ang pow packets and mandarin oranges at various markets around the constituency.

The ang pow packets highlight six popular Serdang dishes, which include yong tau foo, pan mee and grilled fish.

To create a more festive atmosphere, a lantern with snake motifs will be placed next to the new village’s Rainbow Bridge while red lanterns will be strung up at Seri Kembangan’s two markets, Jalan Besar, Jalan SK6/1 and other entry points by the end of this month.
