Job opportunities for people with disabilities

DAYBREAK Association’s Open Day and Job Fair for People with Disabilities (PWD) will take place tomorrow.

It aims to raise awareness of the charity organisation’s training programmes for PWDs and to create opportunities for them to be employed.

The event will take place at the association’s centre at Lot 75242, Jalan Pulai, RPT Pengkalan Pegoh, Lahat, Perak from 8.30am to 12.30pm.

Daybreak chairman Leonard Lim Chin Chye said persons with physical and learning disabilities could gain work skills at their centre under its vocational training programme.

“We will also help them find employment in the open market under the supported employment programme,” he said.

Lim said the training programme was also extended to special school students under a partnership with the state Education Department’s special education unit.

“Under the ‘Together We Work Programme’, special school students are given training on job knowledge for six months.

“Upon completion, they may join our vocational training programme directly,” he said.

Daybreak executive chairperson Puan Sri Sandra Lee said the centre has qualified and trained staff, including occupational therapists, to provide work skills training and job coaching to work with employers on supported employment for their trainees.

“We accept trainees with physical and learning disabilities from all races and walks of life.

“We do not charge them for attending our programmes,” she said, adding that the NGO mainly depended on donations from individuals and organisations.

During the open day and job fair, there will be open interviews for employment with participating companies.

Companies participating in the event include Kentucky Dairy Ice Cream Sdn Bhd, Cycledios Bhd, AG Apparel Industries Sdn Bhd, 99 Speedmart, and Econsave.

There would also be free medical check-ups by the Perak Community Specialist Hospital, mental health awareness talk by Mentari Batu Gajah, handicraft workshop, training workshop, cupcake decoration session and colouring contest.

The event will also feature booths by secondary school students selling handicrafts, food and beverages and plants.
