THIS year’s Gawai celebration will be especially meaningful for 13 special education students from SMK Sungai Merah as they have received donations from the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu branch.
Vice-chairman Johnady Jantom, representing chairman Chambai Lindong, handed the donations to the school’s principal Wong Siew Ling.
Wong expressed her gratitude to SDNU Sibu for showing concern about the needs of the special students ahead of Gawai celebrations on June 1 and 2.
“I am very moved because the dream of the special children to celebrate Gawai just like other children will be fulfilled,” she said.
Meanwhile, Johnady hoped that the less fortunate would continue to receive support not only from NGOs but also from individuals regardless of religion and race.
He said that although the aid given by SDNU Sibu for the first time was not that much, he was confident that it would benefit the recipients.
“I want SDNU to continue their noble endeavours because they can bring happiness to those who really need it,” he said.
Also present at the ceremony were special education senior assistant Ling Chu Siong, programme coordinators Laura Brown and Louisiana Utica Noed, and SDNU Welfare Bureau head Anyie Angking.
