Sew good to spread joy by upcycling old curtains

In collaboration with Kloth Cares to support B40 seamstresses, old curtains and fabrics are upcycled and repurposed to be given new life.

A PROPERTY developer is ramping up its fabric upcycling efforts by launching a festive film and teaming up with a non-profit group to repurpose cloth for the needy.

SP Setia unveiled its Hari Raya Aidilfitri theme for 2023, “Lembaran Baru, Setia Bersama”, which continued from its Chinese New Year 2023’s upcycling theme.

Signifying new beginnings as Malaysians celebrate this festive season, “Lembaran Baru” represents a new “layer” or “chapter” that brings renewed hope.

In line with this theme, SP Setia launched its festive film, Langsir, to inspire viewers to do good through upcycling and whatever else they could to help those in need.

Langsir tells of how Nana felt burdened by the voluntary work of her mother, Azizah, a seamstress who collects and upcycles old curtains to be donated to those in need.

She is then reminded of the joy and fulfilment her mother’s good deed brings to the community.

As an on-ground extension of the film’s theme, SP Setia is once again collaborating with social enterprise Kloth Cares for its fabric upcycling drive.

“In support of communities in need while reducing waste, this fabric upcycling drive is part of our environmental, social and governance agenda to reduce environmental impact, especially during the festive season,” said SP Setia group branding and communications head Adelene Wong.

As part of this upcycling drive, 41 bins have been placed at SP Setia’s sales galleries and venues in Malaysia, Melbourne in Australia and Singapore to collect preloved curtains and used fabrics.

SP Setia Bhd commissioned seamstresses from Kloth Cares, who are from the B40 group, to repurpose old curtains collected through the fabric upcycling drive leading up to Raya.

These will be distributed to asnaf or underprivileged families to enable them to decorate their homes for the festive season.

Those who wish to donate their old curtains or used fabric items such as clothes, toys and bags can drop them into one of the fabric upcycling bins at SP Setia’s sales galleries.

A fabric upcycling selfie competition is also being organised, with winners receiving an upcycled fabric pouch produced by Komuniti Tukang Jahit.

Those donating old curtains at one of the fabric upcycling bin locations should take a photo of themselves taking part in the initiative and send it in for the competition.

Inspired by the Hari Raya campaign theme, the developer also created its Raya packets in a fabric-infused material, which can be collected at its sales galleries.
