Call to expedite road works to resolve jams in Jalan Paya Terubong

Heavy traffic in Jalan Paya Terubong has upset stakeholders there.

RESIDENTS and business operators along Jalan Paya Terubong in Penang are urging the state government to look into severe traffic congestion in the area.

Fruit trader Ooi Kee Boon, 42, said his business was affected as many customers stopped going to his shop to avoid the traffic jam.

“The road is narrow and there are many heavy vehicles using it daily.

“This poses a danger to people who stay nearby.”

Ooi said the best solution would be to accelerate the Paya Terubong paired road project in Jalan Bukit Kukus to disperse traffic.

“It seems like the project has been stalled for some time.

“Traffic congestion can definitely be reduced with a new road,” he said.

Paya Terubong MCA constituency coordinator Chooi Foo Cheong urged the state government to take over the paired road project to speed up the process.

“We were told there are some issues with two developers that are supposed to carry out the project.

“We hope that the state government can look into this issue.

“For now, all vehicles have to use the old road that passes through several residential areas,” he said.
