SOME 144 dengue cases were reported in Petaling Jaya between May 15 and 21 this year.

Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir said this brought to 1,472 the total number of cases reported in the city since the beginning of the year.

“The dengue situation is worrying as the total cases increased by 136% from the previous week, which recorded 61 cases.

“The number of outbreak localities also increased, from 27 to 44.

“Of this figure, there were six new outbreak localities, 29 (controlled outbreak), three (uncontrolled outbreak) and six hotspot outbreak localities recorded.

“No new deaths were reported,” he said during the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) full board meeting.

Separately, Mohamad Azhan said the city council would continue to strengthen the PJ Smart Sustainable and Resilient 2030 strategic plan, which is a priority for the city’s future development.

This has been translated through the setting of key performance indicators and 10 thematic projects which are the main focus in every aspect of urban development planning.

“As part of this effort, MBPJ introduced the Petaling Jaya Neighbourhood Safety Programme (PKKPJ) in 2011,” he said.

Mohamad Azhan added that the PKKPJ programme, which offered cash grants, also aimed to encourage community involvement, strengthen communication between residents and MBPJ, and increase the level of security awareness.

“The effectiveness of this programme is measured through several indicators, namely increased involvement among stakeholders and improved awareness of neighbourhood security.”

The mayor said the city council was inviting residents associations, Rukun Tetangga and joint management bodies in low-cost housing schemes to submit applications to join the programme this year, subject to conditions.

Applications are open until June 10.
