Northern Lights recreated

Visitors entranced by the beautiful ‘Aurora’ display in the night sky over Setia SPICE Convention Centre in Bayan Lepas, Penang.

SEEING the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights is on many people’s travel bucket list, though this may seem less possible with current economic constraints.

But thanks to technology, thousands got to witness this bedazzling curtains of coloured lights recreated in the night skies above Setia SPICE Convention Centre in Penang.

Organised by developer S P Setia, the magical experience called “The Aurora” was held over five nights at the convention centre’s rooftop garden.

Visitors who turned up early made themselves comfortable on the manicured lawns and were treated to music from a live band.

Just after sunset, theatrical smoke was released and laser lighting was projected to bring the Aurora Borealis spectacularly to life.

Banks of green, blue, purple, red and yellow danced overhead, thrilling visitors who had their mobile phones and cameras pointed upwards to capture the display.

S P Setia Bhd property north deputy general manager Sherman Kam said the intention was to give Malaysians something to enjoy now that the country was returning to normality.

“We decided to bring the Northern Lights here so people wouldn’t need to go to the ends of the world to see it,” he said during the opening night.

Auroras are natural displays of light seen predominantly around the Earth’s polar regions as a result of charged particles from the sun interacting with the planet’s magnetic field.

Lesser known is its southern counterpart, the Aurora Australis.

Either one has only been seen in equatorial regions a handful of times throughout recorded history when solar activity was abnormally high.

S P Setia’s “The Aurora” light show was free to the public but required pre-registration.

Around 1,500 people turned up each night for its run in Penang, which ended on May 4.

Besides the light display, the event also featured an LED playland with illuminated swings and roly-polies while LED-clad ballerinas and fairies walked about to entertain visitors.

“The Aurora” show will make stops in the Klang Valley, starting with the Setia Alamsari Welcome Centre in Kajang this Saturday and Sunday.

After that, the show will dazzle crowds at the Precinct Arundina Clubhouse in Setia Eco Park, Shah Alam, on May 21 and 22, the Setia Eco Templer Sales Gallery in Rawang (May 28 and 29) and the Setia Bayuemas Lake Park in Klang (June 4 and 5).
