THE lights turn green so you drive on, thinking it's safe to go. But just as you start to move, a vehicle suddenly whizzes by, missing you by mere inches and leaving you with a pounding heart.

Such has been the hair-raising near misses experienced by Seri Kembangan residents when driving through the Jalan Besar-Jalan BS3/1 traffic interchange for the past four months. The traffic lights at the main road of Jalan Besar, which is a straight road cutting across the traffic interchange, is not functioning.

Motorists using this road just speed through without slowing down or stopping at the junction.

And when the lights turn green at Jalan BS3/1, motorists wanting to turn right into Jalan Besar have collided or had near misses with cars using Jalan Besar, coming from the left.

Puchong MCA division chairman Datuk Liew Yuen Keong and government monitoring bureau chief Dr Wong Kok Fye raised this matter at a press conference and called for the authorities to repair the faulty traffic light on Jalan Besar.

They said a check with the Seri Kembangan police station revealed that no less than 10 accidents have occurred at the junction since January.Wong also showed video footage of near collisions at the said junction.

“Traffic movement from Jalan BS 3/1 into Jalan Besar towards Taman Universiti is not being coordinated properly.

"Although the lights at Jalan BS 3/1 are green, oncoming traffic from Serdang along Jalan Besar have no indication that traffic will be entering their lane,” said Liew. Expressing concerns over the lack of warning and safety signage, Liew and Wong pointed out that due attention should have been accorded to this stretch as it was a busy thoroughfare that serviced Bukit Serdang, Olive Hill and the Seri Kembangan Commercial Centre.

"There should be better coordination between the authorities to ensure better road safety for motorists,” said Liew.

He added that Jalan BS 3/1 fell under the purview of the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) while Jalan Besar was the responsibility of the Selangor Public Works Department (JKR).

When contacted, MBSJ and JKR replied that they would look into the matter.
