Abandoned drain project in Chaah poses safety risk

Residents in Chaah, Segamat are worried about their health and safety as a drainage upgrading project has been left uncompleted for months.

Bekok assemblyman Tan Chong said the project at Taman Damai Chaah and Taman Sri Chaah started around January this year but was later abandoned by contractors.

“The site of the unfinished project has not only become an eyesore but also posing a hazard to those living in the area,” he said when contacted.

He added that he visited the area five times since March and saw nothing had been done despite efforts to alert the local authorities.

“Apart from causing a foul smell, the drain has also become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other pests.

“What is most worrying is that a row of houses in front of the drain is now at risk of collapsing, as the soil around the project has been exposed to the elements for a long period of time,” Tan said.

He added that at least 15 houses were affected.

“The longer the project is left abandoned, the more dangerous it will be for the families living in this area.

“I urge the contractors to complete the project as soon as possible before anything untoward happens,” he said. — VENESA DEVI
