Steps owners should take to safeguard pets during flood

AN ANIMAL welfare group is calling on owners to take the proper steps to ensure their pets survive a flood.

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Selangor animal welfare officer Kelvin Cheah Kheng Tatt advised owners to secure their pets in the event of an imminent flood.

“The most important thing is to secure your pet in a carrier first.

“Keep their food and clean water handy and don’t worry about the litterbox,” he said when commenting on social media posts of pets that were stranded due to last weekend’s floods in the Klang Valley.

Cheah advised owners to not place their pets in a carrier on top of the roof.

“If a rescue boat comes and you have to leave your pet, set it free so it can have a better chance at survival.

“Keep in mind also that the pet is vulnerable to hypothermia due to the cold weather,” he said.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Animal Association president Arie Dwi Andika called on the public to continue feeding strays.

“You don’t have to go far, just attend to the ones near your housing area.

“Our group of seven volunteers are on the lookout for stray cats and dogs.

“Some irresponsible owners have abandoned their pets in remote locations, making it difficult for the animals to find food,” he said. — By FARID WAHAB
