HOW Penang Hospital came into being is not widely known even among Penangites, yet it is a landmark steeped in history that goes back to the island’s early settlers.
The founding of the 167-year-old hospital was rooted in one of the earliest civil societies that eventually earned a dark reputation with the British colonialists: Ghee Hin Kongsi under the stewardship of its leader Mun Ah Foo.
