Appeal for more blood donors in JB

THE Johor Baru chapter of Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) hopes to see more people coming forward to assist hospitals in replenishing their blood banks. Its chairman Chong Ah Ng said the number of people donating blood had dropped by about 40% since the movement control order was imposed last year.

“On top of that, a lot of blood donation drives also had to be cancelled because of the pandemic.

“We had planned to organise 22 donation drives last year but we only managed to carry out seven, ” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after the launch of a blood and organ donation campaign organised by Johor Baru MRCS chapter in association with San Chuan Malaysia Welfare Association and Guan Sheng Di Jun Goddess Devotees Association in a mall in Johor Baru.

He noted that because some programmes were cancelled last year, MRCS only collected about 1,000 packs of blood for hospitals.

“Previously, we could collect between 4,000 and 5,000 packs of blood in a year.

“We hope to see more donors coming forward during our blood donation campaigns this year, ” he said, adding that MRCS had collected about 200 packs of blood from two programmes earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Johor Baru mayor Datuk Adib Azhari Daud, who launched the event held last week, lauded the group’s effort in carrying out the programme here.

“This is a great move and I hope that it receives good response from the public.

“I would also like to thank donors for coming out to help those in need and saving lives, ” he said.

Among those donating blood here was first-time donor Yeo Kah Ho, 19.

“I have wanted to do this for a long time and as the opportunity presented itself today, I decided to show up.

“It was not as painful as I thought it would be. And I am glad to finally be able to donate blood.

“I hope this will help save a life, ” he said.

Another donor was Jack Tan, 22, who said this was his fifth time donating blood.

“My father is a volunteer in MRCS and I have been following him to blood donation campaigns since I was a child.

“I first donated blood when I was about 18 years old and have since tried my best to donate at least once a year, ” he said.
