MB: Expedite plans to declare Segamat part of ECER

Hasni: Johor government welcomes and supports economic development corridors such as Iskandar Malaysia and ECER.

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor hopes the process of declaring Segamat as a new economic growth area in the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) corridor can be expedited.

Mentri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad said this would help the state government in driving economic development in the state.

He said the plan to make Segamat part of ECER had been announced by the Federal Government previously, following the success of the economic corridor attracting RM1.61bil investment in Mersing.

“Following the success, ECER plans to widen its territory through its ECER Masterplan 2.0 (EMP 2.0), which involved the Segamat district.

“The state government has plans for this district by focusing on the agriculture sector through our food security initiative, ” he added.

Hasni, who is the Benut assemblyman, said this in his winding up speech during the state assembly sitting at Bangunan Sultan Ismail here.He also said the state government was appealing for the declaration process to be carried out as soon as possible at the Federal Government level.

Hasni said the Johor government always welcomed and supported economic development corridors such as Iskandar Malaysia and ECER to spur economic growth within an area.

He said development projects and programmes within Iskandar Malaysia was only focused in three districts such as Johor Baru, Kulai and Pontian while ECER only covered Mersing.

The ECER was introduced in 2007 and covers east coast of peninsular Malaysia from Kelantan to Terengganu, Pahang and Mersing. — By MOHD FARHAAN SHAH
