Kajang Chinese Methodist Church and Kajang Assembly of God Church volunteers helping to clean up houses affected by floods in Kajang.

IT WAS a busy Sunday for several Kajang residents who assisted flood victims in cleaning up their homes.

Heavy rain on July 18 inundated parts of the town as water rose to almost a metre, damaging furniture and electrical appliances.

Rumah Caring Kajang founder Wendy Yap helped to coordinate the clean-up effort.

“The flood was one of the worst and we knew that people would need help so I set up a chat group that same evening with representatives from Kajang Chinese Methodist Church and Kajang Assembly of God Church, among others, to identify those who would need help.

“The churches gathered about 100 volunteers to help out residents in Jalan Reko, Taman Cahaya and Taman Muhibbah, ” she said.

Kajang Chinese Methodist Church Rev Matthew Choong said they split volunteers into smaller groups to reach out to more families.

“We managed to clean eight houses, one children’s home and a church by the end of the day.

“Luckily, some of our members had water pressure pumps to wash the mud away, ” he said.

Kajang Assembly of God Church Rev Fong Lee Khon said their volunteers managed to clean 17 houses.
