Penang youngsters dominate Under-12 football tourney

The players and officials who took part in the Datuk M S Maniam Under-12 football tournament organised by MIFA.

PENANG-based SPT Indian FA made a clean sweep at the Malaysian Indian Football Association (MIFA) Under-12 football tournament in Asia Camp in Kerling, Hulu Selangor.

The young boys from Penang scored a convincing 3-0 win over Kelab Bolasepak Banting of Selangor in the final to lift the Datuk M. S. Maniam Cup.

SPT Indian FA’s goals were scored by Nehru Ranganathan, Yagnesh Anandakumaran and Sharvin Thangaraja.

The Northern boys also swept all the titles at stake, with Nehru clinching the Top Scorer award with six goals and Best Player in the Final.

The other titles that they bagged were Tournament Best Player, which went to Dinesh Subramaniam and Best Goalkeeper won by Jaanuwaar Ahmad Iskandar.

MIFA Kluang United finished third after edging MIFA Kuala Selangor on penalties after playing to a scoreless draw in regulation time.

In the semi-finals, SPT Indian FA edged MIFA Kluang by a solitary goal while MIFA Kuala Selangor won on penalties against MIFA Kuala Langat after being level at 1-1 in regulation time.

In the quarter-finals, SPT Indian defeated Intan Rovers Junior 3-0, MIFA Kluang United won 1-0 over Masai United, MIFA Kuala Selangor beat Glenmarie United 3-0 and Kuala Langat scored 2-0 win over Kelab Bolasepak KSA.

A total of 24 clubs under the MIFA Beyond Grassroot Development programme, which has been operating for the past four years, took part in the tourney.

MIC deputy-president Datuk M. Saravanan who is also Tapah MP opened the tournament with MIFA president Datuk T. Mohan.
