Tho has raised the level of his floor because water frequently enters his house in Jinjang Selatan.

THOSE living along Jalan Jambu Air Laut in Jinjang Selatan, Selangor live in fear whenever it rains as flash floods are common.

Residents said the constant flooding was caused by clogged drains.

Many have taken matters into their own hands by raising the height of their floor.

“During a downpour, water will enter my house to a height of eight inches, ” said resident Tho Chong Chuwai, 73.

His wife, Lian Kim Sek, 65, said they could not sleep whenever it rained at night.

“Floods occur two to three times a week, ” she said.

Another resident, Ng Fatt Chai, 51, said, “I live in constant fear for my parents’ safety.”

Lian said although the drain was cleaned up, the floods recurred.

“The root cause should be identified to stop it from happening over and over again, ” she added.

Wong Yew Lum, 59, who owns WYK Catering and Canopy Services Sdn Bhd located in the area, said he had reported the matter to the authorities for years but to no avail.

Kepong Community Service Centre head Yee Poh Ping said he forwarded the residents’ complaints to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in September.

“DBKL told me they faced budget constraints.

“I appeal to the Kuala Lumpur mayor to get more allocations so that something can be done to resolve the problem soon, ” he said.
