ONE of the challenges when it comes to mangrove conservation is identifying the right agency to champion the cause.
In an interview with StarMetro, Universiti Malaya (UM) senior lecturer Dr Amy Then said, “We need to present it to relevant agencies. We learned that land matters fall under the state’s jurisdiction and have engaged with the local council and government agencies.”
She said this after presenting the topic “Mangrove, Macroinverte-brates & Men: Recent Insights on Mangrove Restoration and Conservation” at UM.
“I chose this specific topic because many do not realise that mangroves are also interdependent on animals and humans, ” she said.
Then also shared one of the findings from her research.
Mangrove plots are replanted with an element of isotopes in Matang Mangrove forest.
It was unveiled that crabs and gastropods are suitable for recovery in a faunal food web.
She was this month’s speaker in the MyMangrove Monthly Discourse series organised by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Institute for Environment and Development (Lestari) senior lecturer and research fellow Dr A Aldrie Amir. These talks uncover findings regarding issues affecting mangroves specifically.
Mangrove plays a vital part in the ecosystem as it protects the shoreline and environment.
“By doing this monthly discourse, the Malaysian Mangrove Research Alliance and Network (MyMangrove) aims to get scientists and researchers from different backgrounds and institutions to work together, ” he said.
The targeted attendees are students, academicians, relevant researchers, stakeholders and government agencies representatives.
The public is welcome to join the monthly discourse.
