A MERDEKA song presentation inculcated the spirit of patriotism in 700 pupils during Young Patriots’ Day at Wesley Methodist School Penang.

A medley of performances featuring Dikir Barat, cultural dances and a flag parade were also performed during the Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day celebrations.

Methodist Council of Education executive director Khor Hong Yin said they hoped the two-in-one celebration would instil love for the nation among the pupils.

“We are reminding our pupils that Malaysia belongs to all of us, and that they are the future of the nation.

“So we want to inculcate positive values in them which are fundamental to the growth of our country.

“When these chidlren grow up, they will be able to serve the country well, ” he said during the event at the school premises at Lebuh Sungai Pinang 1, on Saturday.

Penang women, family development and gender inclusiveness committee chairman Chong Eng lauded the school for heightening the awareness of young children about the country.

“It is important to instil patriotism at a young age.

“When children love their home and country, they grow up with a sense of pride and belonging to the country.

“They will then be appreciative about their heritage, diversity, history and strive to improve their beloved country, ” she said.

After the celebrations, the pupils took part in activities like a colouring contest, pop quiz and singing contest.
