Britain’s famous fish and chips shop opens in highlands

HARRY Ramsden’s world-famous fish and chips has reached Malaysian shores, or highlands to be precise.

The Laughing Fish by Harry Ramsden offers a slice of British cuisine in a quintessentially British setting at SkyAvenue, Resorts World Genting.

The opening of the UK-based restaurant in Genting Highlands is part of the resort’s drive to bring more international food and beverage brands to Malaysia.

Present at the recently-held grand opening were British High Commissioner to Malaysia Charles Hay, Resorts World Genting Leisure and Hospitality executive vice-president Datuk Edward Holloway and Boparan Restaurant Group International Development director Judd Williams.

“It is great to stand here in a true slice of Britain brought all the way to Malaysia by Harry Rasmden,” said Holloway.

“This is the first and only fish and chips’ shop of its kind in Malaysia, and we are certain that our ‘chippie’ will be a hit with our guests.

“It continues our drive to bring unique, sophisticated and cool culinary concepts from all across the world, including Brooklyn’s Motorino, London’s Burger & Lobster, Paris’ Cafes Richard and tapas from Spain at La Fiesta, under one roof at our humble mountaintop,” he added.

The restaurant located at Level 4 of SkyAvenue was transformed into jolly ol’ London for the evening, featuring the Union Flag and British Beefeaters.

Harry Ramsden is known as “Britain’s longest established restaurant chain”, serving fish and chips in the UK since 1928.

The chain has expanded to 35 restaurants in the British Isles.

The Laughing Fish by Harry Ramsden is an elevated take on the Harry Ramsden atmosphere created specially for Resorts World Genting.

“This is a truly exciting new horizon for us. The Harry Ramsden brand has always had international ambitions in Malaysia, a country that has long and great ties with Britain, and what better place to begin that dream than in Resorts World Genting,” said Williams.

Guests at the event enjoyed a four-course meal which included Laughing Prawn Cocktail, Fish Curry with Double-fried Chips, a choice of haddock or cod fish and chips, and Chocolate Brownie or Eton Mess for dessert.

They were also treated to a musical collaboration featuring guitarist Aidan O’Brien from Ireland and Malaysian percussionist Badar Fawzi Taleb.
