AROUND 700 mini paper craft hot air balloons resembling lanterns are now lighting a sidewalk at the Esplanade in Penang every evening from 7.30pm to midnight.
Another balloon display is being held at the Butterworth Art Walk featuring 400 balloons.
Both displays, to be held until March 21, are a prelude to the Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2018.
The fiesta is returning for the fourth time on Feb 24 and 25, which happens to be the ninth and 10th days of Chinese New Year.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the colouring of the mini paper craft balloons was done by kindergarten and primary school kids to express their artistic talents.
He said the Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta would feature 15 international and local hot air balloons over the two days from 7am to 9.30pm at the Polo Ground.
“This path of little balloons is a platform to showcase children’s creativity and a place for the public to enjoy the beauty,” he said at the lighting up ceremony along Light Street recently.
Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2018 is arranged by AKA Balloons Sdn Bhd and funded by the state government with the cooperation of the Penang Island City Council, Seberang Prai Municipal Council and Penang Global Tourism.
Also present were state Tourism Development committee chairman Danny Law, City Council mayor Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif and secretary Yew Tung Seang.
