HERE is a rewarding strategy for making the most of those precious shop-all-you-can chances.
To increase your trolley space for the shopping spree, grab a piece of luggage such as a big suitcase. One team mate fills the trolley and another fills the luggage.
When the trolley is almost full, pile the filled luggage on top. You will then achieve a bigger hoard.
“It’s a clever idea that is not against the rules, as long as the luggage can sit on the shopping trolley. I’ve seen some shoppers use large pails,” said Petron Malaysia Refining and Marketing Bhd communications manager Suraya Haris Ong with a smile.
She was affirming the cunning ways of some of the 40 winners of the Petron Hypermarket Sweep in Giant Hypermarket, Bayan Baru, Penang, recently.
A few used the ‘suitcase strategy’ and many of the others saw the wisdom and emulated it.
Twenty of them were in five grand prize teams. In teams of four, they had five minutes to pack two shopping trolleys and Petron footed the bill for up to RM5,000 worth of goods.
Another 20 in five teams won the consolation prizes. The teams had four minutes to do the same and Petron paid for up to RM3,000.
The rush was pure euphoria for grand prize winner Zainol Abidin Am, 70, and his three sons Mohammad Zain, 35, Mohammad Hazreel,34 and Amirul Hakim, 25, from Sungai Petani.
“Except for the suitcase, we didn’t have any planning. I just told my sons to take whatever they liked,” said Zainol.
Other than stuffing their trolleys to bursting with household essentials, his sons managed to fit their trolleys with the filled suitcase, a children’s bicycle and a four-section aluminium stepladder.
In contrast, grand prize winner Ong Sheerwin, 26, and her team had it all planned.
“We came a day earlier to check the hypermarket’s layout and determine what to fill our suitcases and trolleys with,” she said.
With her sister Li Jin, 23, brother Tee Sheng, 14, and friend Tan Sin Peng, 31, their haul was RM5,003 worth of premium foodstuff and household essentials.
“I never thought filling up RM300 in Petron fuel each week would have earned me this shopping spree,” Sheerwin said gleefully.
Petron retail sales manager Mohd Shaibi Ahmad Hijazi said RM240,000 worth of goods were given to 56 Petron Miles card holders in five locations this season.
“Our hypermarket sweep happens each year since 2015. Customers love it, so we continued and even held it in more locations.”
Also present were Giant Bayan Baru general manager Suresh Sivam and Giant Hypermarket northern area manager Mohd Asri Mohd Jaafar.
The sweep was held in Shah Alam, Johor Baru, Penang, Kuantan and Kota Kinabalu.
