A by-election that took place not long after the 14th General Election steered national attention to the relatively quiet areas under Kajang Municipal Council in 2018.

The Balakong by-election was held on Sep 8 following the death of former Balakong assemblyman Eddie Ng who was also a Kajang councillor, in a road accident on July 20.
