SOME actresses can only dream of getting noticed but Kharina Kharuddin, of Malaysian-American parentage, has her sights set much higher — hitting the silver screens of Hollywood.
Fresh out of secondary school, the Malaysian actress and part-time model is no stranger to the limelight, though she has had to juggle her hectic acting schedule with studying in a public school.
She has appeared mainly as minor characters in Malay dramas over the last few years and has worked with some well-known names in the entertainment industry such as Syafiq Yusof and Jehan Miskin.
“I always get the same type of character though, which is the ‘Mat Salleh celup’,” said Kharina, who speaks with a distinct American accent.
“I have always liked being in front of the camera. Getting dolled up and being in the spotlight has always been something that I enjoy.”
Kharina has her set her mind on studying performing arts in university and hopes to be able to do so in the United States, where her mother’s side of the family resides.
“The ultimate goal, which many would say is impossible, is Hollywood. But I believe that if you have the drive and think you have what it takes, hopefully somewhere along the line, you will get there.”
Outside of work, Kharina really enjoys singing and has even had the opportunity to audition for reality television show American Idol two years ago. With the show now in its final season, she hopes to try out for The Voice instead.
She is also quite the animal lover and admitted that her home was like a mini-zoo, with pets that include cats, rabbits, turtles, chickens, hedgehogs, sugar gliders and fish.
Kharina also loves going to beaches, enjoys horseback riding and occasionally indulges in drawing and painting projects.
