Presma has no authority to control prices


THE Malaysian Indian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) says it constantly monitors members to ensure that they do not hike food prices indiscriminately.

Its president Ayoob Khan Muhamad Yakub said they carry out surveys regularly to monitor prices, hence the association was appreciative of StarMetro’s initiative.

“A proper survey must include all types of eateries and not just Indian Muslim and Indian restaurants, you have to be fair.

“And it must include areas such as Bukit Bintang, Bangsar, Jalan Ampang, Cheras, Kampung Medan, Puchong and Batu Caves.

“Apart from location, you need to take into consideration outlets which provide services like air conditioning, WiFi and Astro.

“Also comparisons must be made with DBKL licensed stalls where the traders only pay a few hundred ringgit for rent and offer no extras.

“Restaurants in Jalan Ampang pay almost RM100,000 rental a month,” he pointed out.

Ayoob Khan said it was common knowledge that banana leaf restaurants cost more to operate compared to other eateries.

“A banana leaf costs around RM1 and is more hygienic compared to plates,” he added.

Mamak restaurants have become an easy target. It is unfair to point fingers at us only regarding the difference in prices.

“It has been pointed out many times that there are several factors included in the pricing such as the location, facilities, quality of food and other services,” he said.

Ayoob Khan added that Presma had no authority to control prices in any of its member outlets.

“We always work with the local authorities and agencies like the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry when there is an increase in the standard ceiling price of certain goods,” he said, adding certain hikes were beyond their control.
