Here are some tips for making a smoother move.
1) Consider professional help. If you’re making a big move, especially overseas, then hiring experts who will pack and ship can be a life-saver. For one thing, they’ll know about special little rules that help you cut costs.
2) Plan a giveaway. Give away your old clothes, books and toys in a garage sale. Arrange to give away or sell big essential items you plan to replace like refrigerator and washing machines the day before you go. Or even earlier if you can. Decluttering will make the process easier.
3) Pack a suitcase for comforts. The things that you need for the first night in your new home (fresh bedsheets, your own towel and the kids’ cuddly toys) have to be easily accessible at the other end. Pack them in a highly visible box or case and set them aside.
4) Plan a break. When you get to the other end, don’t plan to get straight down to business. Give yourself a week to unpack, settle in and unwind.
