Happy occasion: Zainal Abidin cutting his birthday cake as family members look on.

YAYASAN Basmi Kemiskinan (YBK) celebrated Hari Raya Aidilfitri with more than 1,000 guests at Asrama Kasih YBK.

The event was made more meaningful as it was held on the birthday of the foundation’s chairman, Datuk Zainal Abidin Sakom.

Guests included students of Asrama Kasih, YBK staff, corporate representatives and fellow organisations who have worked with YBK in eradicating poverty.

In his speech, Zainal Abidin said he was touched by the continuous support from former hosteliers, trainers and students of the YBK Community College, YBK volunteers, non-governmental organisations, local leaders and individuals, including the Kampung Seri Serendah community.

“After 25 years of helping the less fortunate, we are happy to see the results tonight as we meet those who have been successful because of YBK’s assistance.

“Our Asrama Kasih itself has produced doctors, engineers, army officers and others who have helped their families out of poverty,” he said.

Later, Zainal Abidin cut a birthday cake which was contributed by the Asrama Kasih alumni.

YBK has given financial assistance to nine community rehabilitation centres in Hulu Selangor to help them plan and execute rehabilitation programmes at their respective centres.

Zainal Abidin hoped YBK would continue to be around for at least another 25 years to celebrate its golden jubilee.
