THE Electra House mall is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and the Association of Merchants Electra House (AMEH) wishes to revive it to its former glory.
The mall, located at Jalan Power, was the first shopping mall in Kuching built in 1965. In its glory days, people from all over Kuching and out of the city would flock to the mall to buy supplies and to hang out.
As it was the only shopping mall at that time, the 60s and 70s saw its peak. The historical building was located near the main public transport hub.
Locals and visitors from outside the city would come to Electra House to take the public transport. In 1996, it had gone through renovation to look like how it is today.
However, gone were the days where it was the most visited place.
With numerous other malls providing more services and comfort, the place has seen a drastic drop in visitors.
Therefore, the 50th anniversary is a reminder to Kuchingnites to not forget the historical place.
“In conjunction with this 50th anniversary, we came out with some events and promotions. We just want to create awareness to the public,” said AMEH secretary Jeremy Choo during the press conference.
He said many Kuching residents used to ask him if Electra House still existed. The mall is still up and operating, although it has less stores compared with other malls. Patrons still come to visit the fabric shops, electronic shops, gadget stores, sports equipment store, jeweller, tailors, saloon and other trading shops.
In collaboration with Hong Leong Bank, the mall will hold a blood donation drive for the Sarawak General Hospital on June 13.
It will hold a children colouring contest on June 27. AMEH is targeting 150 primary school students to join the contest.
Hong Leong Bank is again the sponsor for the event and provider of the prizes. The theme for the colouring contest is Celebrating 50th Anniversay with Electra House.
