THE inaugural Café Malaysia 2015 aims to provide those in the coffee business with the opportunity to leverage on its comprehensive and integrated sourcing platform.
Following the success of Cafe Asia 2015 in Singapore, the event also hopes to boost the growth of the café, coffee and tea as well as bakery industries in the Asean region.
With more than 500 billion cups brewed and consumed every year, coffee is one of the most sought-after commodities in the world. The worth of coffee is valued at USD100bil (RM359bil) on an international scale.
Gourmet coffee is now popular in Malaysia with an ever-increasing demand for more specialised Arabica coffees at the expense of the more traditional three-in-one mixes and instant coffees that used to hold sway countrywide.
Cafe Malaysia aims to capitalise on this trend and offer the definitive platform for this ever-expanding section of the Food and Beverage sector.
One such example of this expansion is that of Arissto, platinum sponsor of Café Malaysia 2015. Arissto is a South-East Asian company steeped in the capsule coffee trend, producing premium single-serve coffees made from the best Arabica beans blended with Robusta to create an enriched flavour.
According to Euromonitor, this trend has “rejuvenated” the coffee market in the past five years and sales have increased to US$10.8bil, against a rise of 35% for the total coffee market.
The inaugural event’s main highlights include two competitions – the Malaysia Latte Art Championship (MLAC) and the Malaysia Brewers Cup (MBrC), sanctioned by World Coffee Events.
The two events are organised by the MSCA in hopes of promoting Malaysia’s barista talents in the continual quest to improve gourmet coffee standards in Malaysia.
Winners of the respective competitions will have the honour of representing Malaysia in the respective World Championships from June 16 to 18 in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Café Malaysia has also begun a Café Owners Alliance initiative, which is an additional value-add platform for café owners in Malaysia to publicise their cafes through Café Malaysia’s numerous publicity platforms.
Cafe Malaysia will be held at the Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur, from May 7 to 9.
It is supported by the Malaysian Specialty Coffee Association (MSCA), the Ecuadorian and Colombian embassies as well as the high commissions of Sri Lanka and New Zealand, most of whom are coffee and tea-producing countries.
The exhibition is also supported by the Tourism and Culture Ministry, Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau, Asean Coffee Federation, Barista Association of Thailand, Philippine Coffee Board, Lao Coffee Association, Singapore Coffee Association and the Speciality Coffee Association of Indonesia.
