RUNNING enthusiasts can lace up their shoes as the Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletic Association (FTKLAA) is set to organise its annual cross-country event this year.

FTKLAA is partnering with Sports Toto to organise the “Go For It! FTKLAA Cross-Country 2023” event.

Scheduled for July 9, the event was inaugurated in 1985 and is now in its 36th year.

FTKLAA secretary Muregesu Soosaimany said the run was open to everyone, including foreigners.

“In the past, only Malaysians were allowed to participate but this year, we want to create an opportunity for others as well.

“We believe foreigners living and working in this country can enhance the vibrancy of the event,” he said at the event’s launch at Wisma OCM.

The cross-country event is divided into different categories.

There are 15km and 7km races for men and women, a 3km Kids Run, and a 5km Fun Run for families.

FTKLAA president Datuk Seri V. Pulainthiran said this year’s run differed from previous editions as it had an additional task which was a 1.2km jungle path.

“We have added the jungle path to our 15km, 7km and 3km runs, which will be in Taman Tugu in Persiaran Sultan Salahuddin,” he said.

Participants will move through a variety of landscapes including jungle paths, tarmac and hills, all throughout Padang Merbok, which has served as the traditional location for the race from the start.

Sports Toto Malaysia (STM) Lottery senior communications manager Giam Say Khoon said as the main sponsor, the company believes in promoting a healthy lifestyle for the local community.

“By supporting this event, we also hope to help FTKLAA unearth sporting talents,” he said.

Khoon added that other events lined up included lucky draws offering rewards like electrical appliances and holiday packages as well as the grand prize of a motorcycle.

Games booths will also be set up to offer more fun.

Each participant will receive a goodie bag, T-shirt, ecertificate and finisher’s medal. Breakfast will be provided.

Additionally, the top five finishers in each section will be given placement trophies and cash prizes.

Registration is open to all and closes on June 9, or upon reaching 2,000 participants.
