Millennial and Gen Z travellers in the Asia Pacific region are willing to spend a lot of money on holidays, according to a recent survey by a digital booking platform.

The data by Klook found that 81% of Malaysian travellers are willing to spend an average of RM9,000 on their holidays. This amount is more than double the average monthly income across Asia, which stands at about RM4,800.

As for Gen Z-ers in Asia, one in five are willing to spend nearly RM14,000 on holidays (for millennials, it is one in four)!

The survey also shows that 81% of millennials and Gen Z in Malaysia prioritise experiences, making it a driving force of their travel adventures. About 90% of those in the survey say that they seek memorable experiences and among the experiences they look out for include theme parks, outdoor adventures, cave exploration and island tours.

Klook’s chief operating officer and co-founder Eric Gnock Fah said in a statement: “Experiences and activities become the first thing they (young travellers) look at. This remarkable shift is a testament to their increasing desire for authentic experiences, with their decisions fuelled by social media over traditional sources like search engines and travel guides.”

Japan, Thailand and Indonesia are among the top three destinations for Malaysian travellers, with over 59% planning their vacation two to six months in advance, while 64% prefer to travel locally.

Malaysians (87%) love going on short-haul travels, too.

Their decision is largely influenced by social media. In fact, social media is the first holiday inspiration tool for travellers today. More than half of them search for things to do and see at new destinations on social media platforms.
