The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) will contribute RM1 to Tabung Harapan Malaysia for every visitor at the next Matta Fair in Kuala Lumpur. This is to help in the effort to address the economic challenge facing the country, Matta CEO Phua Tai Neng said in a statement.
“Matta, as Malaysia’s leading travel association, is pleased to join other Malaysians in donating to the publicly funded THM to support the cause and strengthening the nation’s financial situation,” he said.
Phua added that Matta will continue its role in supporting the government, especially in tourism. He reiterated that the tourism industry is the the second highest contributor in terms of foreign exchange earnings, and third in terms of contribution to the gross national income.
Tabung Harapan Malaysia was set up by the new government on May 31 to help reduce the country’s debt through donations. Within 24 hours of its launch, the fund received over RM7 million. By June 6, the total amount collected had exceeded RM4o million.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said that all Malaysians can donate to the fund, which he assured the nation would be managed “systematically and transparently” by his ministry and the government.
Matta Fair is Malaysia’s largest annual consumer travel fair, attracting over 100,000 visitors every year. The upcoming event will at Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur from Sept 7-9, 2018.
