Vanity Fare: Dessert-like fragrances are serving up sweetness with a twist

Sweetness has become one of fragrance’s most irresistible directions, moving beyond simple sugary scents into richer, more nuanced territory. Gourmand notes are being layered with florals, spices, woods and musk, giving familiar indulgences a more sophisticated edge.

From edible inspirations to unexpected takes on vanilla, the latest scents suggest that sweetness is no longer just about smelling good enough to eat.

Sweetness overdose

Kayali’s latest release has been described as a “triple dose of caramel” among fragrance enthusiasts – and one whiff of the perfume will show you just what they mean by that.

Boujee Kitty Caramel Milk 22 is essentially a confection in a bottle.

It combines white chocolate, vanilla caviar, marshmallow, milk, and salted caramel to create this utter treat to the senses.

For additional dimensions, musk and sandalwood are added to the base notes, giving the perfume a kind of enveloping warmth that leaves a delicious trail when you walk by.

Boba treat

The bubble tea beverage phenomenon which took the world by storm doesn’t show any signs of slowing down – especially now that it has inspired a whole other industry.

Vietnamese fine fragrance house D’Annam takes this Taiwanese delicacy and interprets it into a saccharine perfume. Aptly named Bubble Tea, the concoction is a photorealistic execution of the idea.

Notes of black tea, whole milk and brown sugar swirl together harmoniously, creating a comforting, sweet aroma that is equal parts addictive and grounding.

Flower power

For its second launch in the fragrance category, Rare Beauty stays true to an original DNA – one that combines sugared sweetness, fresh fruits and buttery nuts into one irresistible bouquet.

It opens with pear nectar and pistachio. Throughout the day, its gardenia, jasmine and lotus blossom heart shines through, before ultimately, vanilla bean, pink sugar and cedarwood complete the symphony.

While it’s not the archetypal sweet, dessert-like fragrance one might expect, its construction definitely satisfies the requirement of one, just with modern tweaks to tantalise today’s tastes.

New and nuanced

Capturing a different facet of the prized spice vanilla, BDK Parfums’s Vanille Caviar eau de parfum captures the noble ingredient in its truest form.

Here, the usually cloying accord takes on a more mature and imposing shape, emphasising the dry, balsamic and oft-ignored facet of the popular component.

Bringing some lightness into the heady scent profile, blackcurrant bud, cardamom and osmanthus are added to the blend.

To anchor the unconventional pairings, the fragrance is tied together with the depth and warmth of labdanum.

Glazed glory

Burberry’s Goddess collection welcomes a new addition, the all-new Goddess Amber Vanilla.

Here, the star of the show opens with a burst of honeyed richness, thanks to the maple syrup accord. Lavender lends its calming signature to the mix, inviting passers-by to immerse themselves in the scent.

At its heart, a trifecta of vanillas rounds out the perfume’s edges, while its amber core keeps the scent profile fluffy and rich at the same time.
