How do I dress up for events without feeling overdressed? I’m never sure where the line is between smart and too formal. – Adam, KL

Always check the theme. If the event gives you a dress code, follow that and you’re already halfway safe.

But when you’re unsure, aim for smart but relaxed.

Think of it like this: keep one element dressy and one element casual.

Akmal Hakim Ajirul emphasises that in both fashion and grooming, mastering the basics comes first. The trick is balance, you look polished, but not like you’re trying too hard.

My work schedule is hectic, and I often look tired. Are there grooming tricks that help men look fresher without using makeup? – Zeq, Bangsar

First, hydration is key. No dry lips please, keep a lip balm in your bag, pocket, anywhere.

Second, invest in a good hydrating moisturiser and apply it right after a shower while your skin is still damp.

Third, your hair is your crown.

A well-styled haircut instantly makes you look fresher, even if you slept four hours. Keep it healthy, shiny and tidy.

Little things make a big difference. Trim your beard or moustache regularly, clean lines always make you look more awake.

I want to update my wardrobe, but I don’t know where to start. What are the key pieces every man should own today? - Thani, PJ

Start with the basics that work for any style.

A crisp white shirt, a solid black tee, a good ribbed tee or basic Henley, straight-cut trousers (black or navy), a good pair of white sneakers, a structured overshirt or light jacket, and one pair of dark jeans.

Get these right first, then slowly add trendy pieces.

With a solid foundation, you can mix and match easily to always look put-together.

I’ve been thinking about trying height-elevating shoes, but do they actually look natural, or is it obvious I’m wearing them? – Iqbal, Subang

If you choose the right pair, no one will know. Go for shoes with internal lifts, not dramatic external platforms.

Keep the design minimal and the sole not too thick.

When the proportions look balanced with your trousers, it just looks like a normal shoe.

Remember proportions and balance is key.

I’m in my late 30s and my skin suddenly looks dull. What’s the simplest grooming routine I can follow without adding 10 products to my bathroom shelf? – Richard, Damansara

Honestly, go back to basics – cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen. That alone will change your skin if you’re consistent.

If you’re adding just one extra step, choose a vitamin C product for your morning routine. But no need to crowd your bathroom shelf. Consistency beats having 10 products.

How often should I really be getting a haircut? I feel like my style looks messy too quickly, but I don’t want to overdo it. – MK, Ipoh

Most guys look their best with a trim every three to four weeks.

If your hairstyle is more textured or longer on top, you can stretch it to five weeks.

But don’t wait until it looks messy. Think of a haircut like maintenance, not repair.

Clean edges and a tidy neckline alone can make your whole look sharper.

Can I wear sneakers with batik or traditional outfits, or is that a no-go? – Hans, Penang

Yes, and when done right, it looks modern and stylish.

The trick is to choose minimal sneakers: clean white, black, or neutral tones. Avoid anything too chunky or overly sporty.

With a slim batik shirt and trousers, white sneakers look great. They make the outfit feel more relaxed, casual and effortlessly stylish.

For more formal traditional wear, go for sleeker low-tops so the look stays polished. It adds a fresh, youthful energy without taking away from the traditional elements.
