Conquerors of Nazaré’s monster waves: Team Tudor scores a double victory

Home to some of the tallest surfable waves in the world, the renowned Praia do Norte is where only a handful of brave men and women dare to ride the monster waves.

Located in Nazaré, Portugal, the town is also where the Tudor Nazaré Big Wave Challenge is held each year, showcasing the best in big wave surfing.

The World Surf League (WSL) event saw world-class competitors riding the huge swells at full speed as the crowds watched the spectacular performances.

Nic von Rupp and Clément Roseyro from Team Tudor came out tops, clinching the “Best Team Performance” prize.

Von Rupp managed to tow his partner into some of the biggest waves, allowing Roseyro to carve into the wave’s sweet spot and ride out impressively.

The recognition comes after intense training, day after day out on the dangerous swells of the duo’s home base of Nazaré.

It’s been a tough year, but looks like all the hard work has paid off handsomely for them.

Hearty congratulations are also in order as the brand scored a double victory when its newly minted ambassador Roseyro finished incredibly strong and snagged the “Best Male Performance” award.

The French Waterman

Hailing from the coastal town of Anglet, France, Roseyro has felt at home in the water since he was a child.

The ocean has been a major part of his life for as long as he can remember.

He started surfing at six years old and hasn’t looked back since.

Roseyro has tried his hand at almost every water-related sport there is, be it surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, kite-surfing, wing foiling, surf foiling, or long-boarding.

His lifelong passion for the ocean has earned him the nickname “The French Waterman”.

Roseyro has garnered a litany of awards, such as the French SUPChampionship and coming in fifth place at the APP World Tour in Gran Canaria.

He finished ninth place at the ISA World Championships in El Salvador.

In last year’s Tudor Nazaré Big Wave Challenge, Roseyro was fellow Tudor ambassador von Rupp’s teammate, coming in second both individually and as part of a team with von Rupp.

A daring reputation

Swiss national von Rupp has been a part of the Tudor family since 2022, when he joined forces with the Swiss watchmaker just ahead of the Tudor Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge.

He cemented the partnership by clinching Best Team Performance in the competition, winning a Tudor Pelagos for his exploits that day.

He has never taken it off since and a number of accolades have followed, like earning 10 points − the highest score possible − at The Perfect Chapter, an invite-only contest bringing together some of the best barrel surfers in the world, and winning the entire competition, not to mention numerous wins throughout his career at the XXL Big Wave Awards.

In 2023, Tudor teamed up with von Rupp to produce a segment that explored what drove him in his relentless pursuit of the extraordinary.

His outlook is perfectly encapsulated in his own words: “In this game, there is no triumph without challenge.

“You must risk it all and work hard with every sunrise.”

It’s exactly this unwavering commitment to the sport that’s earned von Rupp his daring reputation and landed him as the subject of the second season of HBO’s documentary series 100 Foot Wave, where he takes us inside the world of conquering Nazaré’s massive waves.

And when von Rupp isn’t riding the big waves, he’s honing his craft on smaller ones.

For instance, he travelled to AlaïaBay – a surf park in the heart of the Swiss Alps – to teach hopefuls how to properly ride a wave.

He, of course, had his trusty signature Tudor Pelagos strapped to his wrist the whole time.

The Pelagos is a technical diver’s watch with a complementary design.

With its Pelagos 39 model, Tudor offers a versatile watch at the crossroads between the world of technical diving and urban sophistication.
