Red eyeliner is no longer just for experimental makeup looks.

Used creatively, it can bring the best out of every eye colour – whether as subtle highlighting or as a bold statement.

Anyone can wear red eyeliner, regardless of their eye colour. Nevertheless, there are nuances that go particularly well together, according to makeup artist Lukas Wythe.

Green eyes, for example, look radiant in combination with dark red tones like Bordeaux.

Blue eyes, on the other hand, create an exciting contrast with strong, lighter red tones. And brown eyes? They go with practically all red shades.

Red eyeliner can be worn in a variety of ways.

According to Wythe, you can, for example, apply it as a winged eyeliner. To do this, draw a fine line along the upper lash line and let it fade out in an elegant "wing" or curved arc.

Alternatively, you can also use it as an eyeshadow base. To do this, gently dab the red eyeliner into the outer corner of the eye and blend it in using a small brush or your finger.

This creates a beautiful smokey effect that gives your eye make-up a modern and cool accent.

To make the most of the red eyeliner, the rest of your makeup should be kept rather low-key, says Wythe.

Subtle eye shadow colours such as beige, warm browns or a soft gold create a harmonious background without stealing the show from the eyeliner.

For a glamorous effect, shimmering metallic or glittery shades in gold or copper are suitable.

Black mascara goes well with this to define the eyelashes. Lips and rouge, on the other hand, should be limited to subtle, natural colours that do not distract from the eyeliner.

However, Wythe says that if you tend to have redness or dark shadows under your eyes you might want to approach red eyeliner with caution.

The colour could then be misinterpreted and give the impression that the eyes are irritated or tired, he says.

For this reason, it's good to prep the eye area with a concealer.

In addition, it is advisable to use an eyeshadow primer before applying the eyeliner, says Wythe. This ensures that the pigments adhere better and that the colour remains intense throughout the day. – dpa
