Tote-ally irresistible? The bag design that is basic but simply brilliant

Arguably the most practical bag one could ever own is the tote. Capacious and capable to fill your daily necessities, the simple design of a tote – often with an open-top allowing for easy access – is undeniably useful.

It’s a handy, grab-and-go kind of bag. And, while it may not be the obvious choice for formal events, you can still place your fancy purse in your roomy tote when the occasion for a posh purse comes a calling.

What’s more, its versatility makes it a fitting pick for a variety of activities, including grocery shopping, travel, going to the gym, and even office use.

Despite being traditionally associated with women, contemporary tote bags have become increasingly popular among men, thanks to their convenience and functionality.

Many brands, whether high-street or high-end, recognise the broad appeal of the tote.

They each offer their own rendition, and usually, these totes become their top selling items due to their pricing, often serving as the entry-level option within most designer labels’ handbag collection.

Plus, the appeal also lies in the fact that some brands offer customisation options, including personalised initials as well as different patterns and designs.

This bespoke feature enhances the tote’s allure as it enables the tote owner to express their individual style.

Perhaps the most wanted tote right now is the one designed by Phoebe Philo, an influential designer known for her work at French fashion houses Chloe and Celine previously.

The 50-year-old Brit recently launched her namesake collection.

It was reported that within hours of the online launch, most of the collection, including a £12,000 (RM70,200) shearling jacket, had sold out.

As for the tote? In an extra-large size, it comes in black leather or brown suede, with each material purposely selected in its natural state, allowing any minor imperfections to enhance its charm and character.

Also oversized is Ferragamo’s tote for Spring/Summer 2024 in a beautiful blue hue. Carried by a male model on the runway, the leather tote, complete with protective feet to keep it elevated and free from surface stains, has already captured women’s attention as well.

Stylishly subtle is Fendi’s latest tote, which is structured and features discreet Fendi lettering that seamlessly integrates into the black leather, creating a timeless and understated aesthetic.

For something soft and slouchy, check out Bottega Veneta’s iconic woven tote made from sumptuously soft lambskin. Like all of the Italian label’s logo-free creations, the no-logo tote offers a subdued and refined sense of luxury.

From Loewe comes the Puzzle, an origami-inspired leather tote that can be folded flat for added convenience. This makes it a great travel companion as it packs with ease and carries a touch of creativity wherever you go.

If any of these do not suit your fancy, why not consider something local and exotic? Raffia, batik or mengkuang (woven palm leaf) totes never fail to offer distinctive styles and a touch of tropical twist!
