With lockdowns and the work from home mandate, eyewear has become a popular accessory to style up one’s look.

Video calls and Zoom meetings have seen people scrambling to dress up their appearance – from the neck up, of course. And spectacles are the most common go-to.

Sunglasses may have dipped in popularity as no one needs them indoors, but some countries are already easing up Covid-19 rules. Besides, it doesn’t hurt to plan ahead.

Here are a few of the latest eyewear designs to keep an eye out for. If not to be worn at home, then in preparation of future holidays once the pandemic is over.

Era defining

Giorgio Armani eyewear is revisiting iconic styles of the 1930s and 40s – plus imagery of certain films of that era. The designs represent the contemporary evolution of the first style created and worn by the designer himself. Or as he puts it, “Icon is the style I wear myself. Glasses for me are a complement to a style, the mirror of a personality. I prefer them to be lightweight and essential in design not to be invasive.”

In his image

The latest David Beckham Eyewear designs are curated and imagined by the former footballer himself. They are inspired by Miami, which is a special place for Beckham. He said: “The energy of the city is electric and this new collection of eyewear is inspired by that and the beautiful light, vibrant culture and diversity of its people. Miami has a unique spirit and that’s what we wanted to reflect in the Spring/Summer 2021 collection.”

Bright and cheerful

If you are looking to colour up your life (while staying safe indoors), then choose spectacle frames that exude optimism. And, what better choice than pastel ones? Ray-Ban has a cute selection. Whether oversized, wiith sleek metal temples or in the form of a modern and futuristic style, they will help add personality to your Zoom calls.

Looking ahead

For those who can’t wait to head outdoors once again, relive the memory. Maybe even start preparing early. Putting together your beach outfit in advance? Prada’s designs will surely be something you can mix and match with ease. Whether it be for casual use or for life’s greatest adventures, the sunnies will turn heads.

The next gen

Carrera is also looking back in history for inspiration. The brand is updating bestsellers from its archive – mainly the Champion, Hot, Cool, Changer and Safari models. These now come with a fresh design code. They offer a different attitude: daring, unconventional and able to stand out from the crowd with their distinctive details and unique colour.

Bright future ahead

Another brand that is being endorsed by a celebrity is Vogue Eyewear. The latest campaign features actress Millie Bobby Brown, and calls for everyone to stay optimistic. “While we haven’t been able to travel this last year, I hope this collection brings a smile to people’s faces and allows them to transport themselves somewhere else, even if just for a moment, ” said Brown.

Designed for winners

While a lot of us are able to WFH, life goes on for athletes in training. Oakley recently released a range of eyewear aimed at revolutionising the face of sports. The Kato shades features frameless lens. Strong and lighweight, it also offers multiple nose pads to enable a customised, seamless fit, as well as “earsocks” are moulded over the stems for extra grip.

Runway ready

Burberry’s latest eyewear include styles featured in its Spring/Summer 2021 fashion show. One of the highlights is none other than the Eliot designed – named after British poet T.S. Eliot. It has a surprisingly cool look, with a wraparound silhouette and distinctive cut-out details. The clear frames make it seems especially futuristic.

Looks pretty green

As environmentalism is a big thing in fashion right now, Levi’s has launched sunglasses made of injected bio-based materials. According to the brand, they are crafted from sustainable castor oil: a material claimed to be highly durable and lightweight. Even the packaging has a smaller carbon footprint, fashioned from sustainable cotton.
