Ghostbusters has long been a fan favourite since it came out in 1984. As a franchise, it has stayed in everyone's imagination for decades.

With the upcoming release (November 2021) of the latest film, Ghosbusters: Afterlife, there is much excitement – and feelings of nostalgia. Especially since Bill Murray is returning to portray Dr Peter Venkman, as well as cameos from his original co-stars, Dan Akroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts.

The franchise is also a large part of pop-culture, spawning countless merchandise featuring Ghosbusters iconography.

In Malaysia, a local streetwear label has collaborated with the film.

While various other international brands like A Bathing Ape and Urban Outfitters have come up with Ghostbusters designs in the past, this latest collection aims to stay true to the film – and Malaysian spirit.

"As a homage to Ghostbusters we didn't want to stray too far away from iconic imagery from the movie," explains co-founder of Pestle & Mortar Clothing, Hugh Koh, on how his label references key moments of the film.

He has even added elements that a lot of Malaysians can relate to. For example, a T-shirt in which the graphic draws layout inspiration from local paper The Star.

"Believe it or not, but as we were doing research on Ghostbusters, we came across hardcore Malaysian and South-east Asian Ghostbusters fan sites. From collectors all the way to cosplayers," Koh relates.

The PMC x Ghosbusters designs designs range from T-shirts, all the way to an iconic crew jacket modelled after the Ghostbusters brown overall uniforms.

"Ghostbusters is a worldwide pop culture icon," Koh says. "Many Malaysians who were born in the 1980s or 90s would probably remember the films, characters or song."

He adds: "Through this collection we hope to bring back those fun-filled childhood memories. For those who are unaware of the film we hope to drive awareness around the film that played a part in our childhood."
